Police say a 73-year-old visitor died of apparent drowning Friday in South Kohala.
The victim has been identified as George Diec of Orland Park, Ill.
According to police, officers and firefighters responded at about 1:36 p.m. to the report of an unresponsive snorkeler at the Waikoloa Beach Resort area.
The man reportedly unresponsive in the water and was assisted to shore. With the assistance of a bystander, CPR was performed prior to Diec being taken to The Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:18 p.m.
A coroner’s inquest has been opened and an autopsy ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
